We took another weekend trip.  This time we went horseback riding at a resort called Bacab.  The place used to be a cattle ranch, but was beautifully transformed to a day resort.  We rode in the jungle and saw some amazing things.  Our guide, Mr. Moody, was great.  This was Danny's first time on a horse and he had a great time.  He even had the opportunity to drive his horse unassisted.  By the end of the roughly two hour ride, our legs were like rubber.  I had trouble swinging my leg over my horse to get off!

The growths on this tree are called snake cactus - AKA devil's guts.

At the entrance to Bacab resort.
I love these plants.  These leaves can be used for
roof thatching.

Relaxing pool side

These things can grow to 30 feet (not the boy)!
The leaves are also used for roof thatching.

Mr. Moody is pointing out a medicinal plant.

The sap from this plant looks like blood.
The sap is boiled into a tea and helps with anemia.

Check out the way the vines wrap around the tree.
Eventually, the vines take over
and the tree dies.

A troop of howler monkeys was in the trees above us.
There was even a mother with a baby on her back.

This guy was very curious about us.

The view above us.  We were well covered by the canopy.

The Belize River - very high!

The resident crocodile.
Here he is close up.  Looks friendly, huh??

Our next step was at the Mayan ruin called Altun Ha.  This was an amazing place.  To think of the precision of construction of buildings and the beauty of the symmetry was overwhelming.  Standing up on top of the Temple of the Sun God where the priests would stand looking down on the "regular" people gave us a true sense of the power these men held.

This is the Green Tomb Temple.  (Check out the chalice in the upper left-hand cloud.  We are not sure what this means.)

The fruits from this tree taste live Granny

Top of the world!!!

We had a great day with our tour guide, Wentworth.  We learned so much and saw such beauty.  Love, Margy & Danny
